Intimate Craftsmanship: Our Haerenga with materials.
"Māori-owned, small-batch craft — JDM–VIP inspired details, responsibly made"
Authenticity, Material & Craft
Māori ownership and values
RARI S.D Luxury is proudly Māori (Maaori) owned and operated — our designs, production choices, and business practices reflect whakapapa (lineage), manaakitanga (hospitality/respect), and kaitiakitanga (guardianship). Every limited-run piece is made with those responsibilities in mind: small quantities, local manufacture, and a focus on quality over waste.
Cultural influences in design
- Kaitiaki approach: materials and production prioritize durability and local supply chains(where possible) to reduce waste.
- Whakapapa-led narratives: product names and storytelling acknowledge people, places, and inspirations — not appropriated motifs without permission.
- Visual cues: subtle references to Aotearoa (e.g., curated palette, textures, and embroidery placements) are used to suggest connection rather than direct replication of sacred imagery.
How we reference JDM–VIP culture respectfully
- Aesthetic lineage: RARI translates the JDM–VIP ethos — lowered silhouettes, plush finishes, refined proportions, and bespoke detailing — into clothing: smooth, structured tailoring, premium linings, and restrained branding that mirror VIP restraint and presence.
- Design elements: tactile fabrics (silk blends, brushed cottons), satin trims, contrast piping, and hardware finishes echo automotive interiors; colorways and limited-run "plate" tags reference rare builds and personalised plates.
- Context & intent: references are framed as homage and design translation, not cultural appropriation of automotive subcultures or Māori traditions.
Credits & sourcing
- Māori (Maaori) ownership RARI S.D Luxury (Aotearoa).
- JDM–VIP inspiration: Japanese VIP (bippu) automotive styling traditions (lowered stance, luxe interiors, bespoke visual restraint).
- Materials: curated premium fabrics sourced with sustainability and small-batch quality in mind.
- Production: limited runs (100 or fewer pieces) to maintain exclusivity and reduce environmental impact.
Materials
- Our commitment is to use mainly natural materials as possible in our collections
- Materials and fabrics are chosen for the following: feel, function, natural availability and actual value added to the product design.
- Currently our fabrics and material sources for our collections (including packaging) come from the following areas: China, Aotearoa, Hong Kong, Türkiye
- Our products are proudly and meticulously made in Hong Kong, southern China, and Türkiye.
Respectful practice commitments
- We do not use sacred Maaori symbols (tapu motifs). RARI prioritises the cultural ethos rather then commercial gain off Maaori culture. As of writing, there is only one product in the collection that will forever feature Maaori motifs, the SKUFF HiToppas, as this symbolises grounding VIP, Maaori and the natural world cohesively as a statement piece.
- Limited editions are numbered and accompanied by provenance certificates of authenticity, hand signed by the founder.
- We dont sell what has not physically touched our hands and passed our "ringaringa" quality assurance process, we check all major seams (by the founder) of clothing individually before we deem this ready for the next phase of order fulfilment.
- If we find rejects or a return is un-repairable beyond our knowledge or serviceability, we will recycle as much components as possible.
